Links and resources
Okay! Here are some great places to look for costume pieces and some search terms for places like eBay and Etsy.
Men:
Like I said before think brown! 70's colors were very earthy, brown, green, golden yellow, harvest orange, burgundy, navy, sky blue and such. Steer clear of bright colors, neons and jewel tones are the colors of the 80s.
Jazz pants available in many colors. These pants are special order and require 2 weeks to ship so if you want them order right away.
American Apparel has short shorts in both their lounge wear and swimwear collections. They also sell a lot of vintage style, close cut tees and polos and even have a collection of vintage tees (though their vintage prices are outrageous!) FYI- There are often bare breasts on the site for no apparent reason other than to shock. The direct links I provided shouldn't have any nudity but I wouldn't cruse around the site while at work if I were you.
If you're looking for true vintage, check eBay and Etsy. On Etsy, use terms like "70s mens shirt" or "70s mens tee" in their vintage section. The same terms can work on eBay. You can also use terms like vintage, velour, 70s, shorts, and the like. If you're unfamiliar with Etsy, it's much like the "buy it now" option on eBay in that you don't have to bid for the item, you just pay for it.
Here are a few links to items I think would be great for the show:
Blue and white deer ringer tee
Light brown polo
Terry cloth polo
Long sleeved blue velour v-neck
Brown mesh shirt!
Long sleeved blue collared shirt
Black velour short sleeved polo
And now for the ladies!
Women:
Like I said for the fellas think earth tones and such for your colors. Bright colors and jewel tones are very much the pallet of the 80s and not really in keeping with the 1975 vibe of the show. It really was all about the leotard or the dance brief for bottoms. You can wear dark leggings or tights instead of suntan but it was the general style to wear the leotard over the tight/legging and not the other way around, as is common these days. Belts around the natural waist were quite popular as were legwarmers (yea! legwarmers!).
If you don't feel comfortable wearing only a leotard and tights, you can mix it up with a tee, polo, or sweater over your leotard or with a pair of briefs. If you are worried about your hips and bottoms, remember that dance tights suck you in a lot and you can always do the old drag queen trick and wear 2 pair for extra compression. If you are STILL worried, you can wear tight shorts or a short wrap skirt, but the high cut leotard really does make your legs look fab and you're gonna have to wear one without a skirt in the finale of the show anyway! Onto the links!
Leotards!
American Apparel makes many high cut bodysuits and leotards. Like this one, or this one, or this one. FYI- There are often bare breasts on the site for no apparent reason other than to shock. The direct links I provided shouldn't have any nudity but I wouldn't cruse around the site while at work if I were you.
I've had a lot of luck finding items on eBay and Etsy searching for "vintage leotard" "vintage danskin" and "70s leotard." Other good search terms are "vintage bodysuit" and "vintage dancewear." Here are a few of my favorites.
For those who want a top, LA Jazz Company Tee
Shiny teal leotard with button accent
Red and blue striped 3/4 sleeve leotard
Brown, gold, and green argyle legwarmers (someone needs these!)
Teal or baby blue leotard (Nichole got the same one from the same seller in plum)
Brown leotard with collar, pockets, and zipper (someone needs this too)
Orange deep v-necked shiny leotard
Black tank with a very high cut leg
Navy halter style
V-neck velour burgundy top, long sleeve
I'll keep searching but this should be a great place to start! Let me know if you have any questions.
I'll also keep looking for inspiration photos.

Photo inspiration! Fame! I'm gonna costume forever!
Photo inspiration! Original production and revival
So first I'll start with pics from the show just to give you the idea. Guys, you'll notice that not all of the pants are black, there's lots of brown. Embrace brown! Brown is a very 70's color! There aren't a lot of shorts, you can wear shorts. If you do they need to be 70's short but not all of the guys should be wearing them. Mix it up! Also, dance belts. Regardless of what you wear, unless you're wearing a regular pant like the Al and Paul in the line-up picture, you're gonna need a dance belt
Girls, notice the lack of skirts and shorts, it's all about the leg. You're all gorgeous, embrace you're hot legs! If you MUST wear a skirt it needs to be short. Cassie should really be the only one in a knee length, flashy skirt. She needs to stand out apart from the rest of the line. Remember it's an audition for a Broadway show, you want to show off your assets! Leotards aren't your only option. You can do dance briefs and a top. Polos, tight tees, velour tops, and tight sweaters are all good choices. Though, since we're doing the show in July/August you might want to steer away from the warmer choices.
Photo of the line from the most recent Broadway revival. These costumes are a near replica of the original 1975 production. Click to enlarge.
Okay, now here are some shots from the original production.
From left to right: Greg, Cassie, Shiela, Bobby, Bebe, and Judy
Judy, Richie, Al, Kristine, Val, Mark, and Paul
Zach and Cassie
Maggie, Mike, Connie, Greg
Now I will search for other pop culture and real world examples!
See you soon!

Hi Friends!
Okay, so I've decided the easiest way to do this would be to put all the links and photo ideas in a blog!
Since we're not recreating the original costumes, we have a lot of leeway as far as what we wear goes. The only rule, aside from keep it in the 70's (which I'll cover in posts to follow), is that Cassie should be the only one in red. Others can have touches of red but she should be the only one with a red leotard and skirt.
Also, if you don't want to hunt for your costume or don't have the time, please just let me know and I'll be happy to help! Let me know what you want to pay and I'll get going.
So here we go...
